2017 - NHBA SC04 Dec-2
NHBA SC04 - Barrel Racing - Last meet of the season. Perfect cloudy day for photography, to get details and great printable images.
I used two cameras, so the pics of the first barrel and the other two barrels are not together on the page... you will have to look for them. With over 2000 pics, and some riders with multiple rides, I cannot match them up. Put your name in the comments and I will put your name in the title to make them easier to find.
For this event, I wanted to challenge myself to use two cameras handheld. I was using a 5DM4 and 7DM2. The 5DM4 was for the two away barrels and the 7DM2 was for the close barrel with a wide angle lens. I had goals for each rider. Of course, to get all three barrels, But I wanted to get each barrel a certain way.
The close with the short lens with a decent DOF and shutter speed, the barrel across holding the camera vertically freezing motion, at least one shot going from the 2nd to the 3rd barrel horizontally, the last barrel horizontally, and closeups on the run back in of the horse and/or rider.
I always take count my pics taken when imported and look the percentage of out of focus, improperly exposed, and badly composed images, and my acceptable percentages varies for each criteria, depending on the subject, speed, and lighting conditions of the day.
Switching cameras and having the short lens camera "tied" and dangling from my right forearm while holding the big lens for the rest of the shots, I gave myself a huge break of only having 90% in focus\or properly exposed.
After some practice... I got the hang of it, and will continue to practice the dual camera technique for events where I'm not standing in water. Just in case.
